DFB Sacks Nagelsmann; Jürgen Klopp Named Frontrunner for Germany Job

The German Football Association (DFB) has announced the dismissal of national team coach Julian Nagelsmann. The federation confirmed on Friday that Nagelsmann had requested his removal the previous day during a private conversation with the leadership of the association, a move that had already been reported by other media outlets.

The decision stems from the national team’s early exit from the ongoing World Cup. Following a turbulent group stage, the German squad put on a lackluster performance in the Round of 16 against Paraguay, ultimately losing in a penalty shootout. In response to the disappointing results, Nagelsmann stated that the team deserved a clean slate following such a harsh defeat.

Looking ahead to the coaching role, the DFB stated that they plan to initiate discussions with Jürgen Klopp, who has already signaled his general willingness to take on the position.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf thanked Nagelsmann for his commitment, praising him as a “responsible and sincere person.” Sport Director Rudi Völler also expressed his “respect” for Nagelsmann’s decision, highlighting his qualities as an “excellent coach.”

Additionally, Nagelsmann’s assistants, Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner, will also be leaving the DFB. Furthermore, Sports Managing Director Andreas Rettig announced that he will not be renewing his contract, which is due to expire at the end of the year.
