Drone Attacks Double at German Airports, Prompting Call for Stronger Airspace Security

The German Air Traffic Control (DFS) has registered a significant escalation in air space hazards caused by drones this year. According to figures published by the “Welt”, between January and April of this year, there were 108 reported disruptions involving unmanned aircraft systems. This marks a substantial jump compared to the same period last year, when only 47 incidents were recorded.

Most of these disturbances took place in proximity to airports, with DFS data indicating that 100 incidents were typically reported by pilots near airport areas. The primary affected hub, according to “Welt”‘s report, was Berlin’s BER Airport, which alone logged 25 drone-related interruptions, followed by Bremen (22) and Frankfurt (15).

The aviation industry is suffering high damages due to airport closures resulting from these drone incursions and is now calling for more effective state countermeasures. A spokesperson for Lufthansa Group told “Welt” that recent events demonstrate the continued ability of drones to disrupt flight operations around airports. “Airports, as part of critical infrastructure, require reliable protection,” she stated. The airline further demanded clear assignment of responsibilities among security authorities, along with the rapid acquisition and implementation of necessary detection and defense technology.
