Latvian Prime Minister Evika Silina has announced her resignation following several incidents involving Ukrainian drones. The primary background to this development is the recent repeated incursions of Ukrainian drones, which were originally intended for Russia, into Latvian territory. Prior to her resignation, Silina had already dismissed Defense Minister Andris Spruds after drones crashed in Eastern Latvia. She criticized his handling of the situation before appointing a successor.
The dismissal of Spruds led his party to withdraw its support from Silina’s ruling coalition, causing the coalition to collapse. Speaking in Riga on Thursday, Silina suggested that political opportunists exploited the crisis, despite a strong candidate being available for the Defense Minister role. She concluded her statement by saying, “I am resigning, but I am not giving up”.
In response, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics announced that he will decide on the quickest path to forming a new government on Friday. Meanwhile, the next parliamentary elections in Latvia are scheduled to take place routinely in October.
