Ex-Ambassador: Syrians Willing to Return If Syria Achieves Economic Stability

Andreas Reinicke, the former German ambassador to Syria and current head of the German Institute for the Middle East, believes that many Syrians will voluntarily return to their homeland. According to Reinicke, if the economic conditions in Syria improve sufficiently, the issue of deportation will largely resolve itself, as many individuals wish to go home voluntarily. He suggests that a significant return of Syrian refugees living in Germany could help drive Syria’s development toward becoming a modern country.

The former diplomat recently visited Damascus. He mentioned that if things progress positively, a private German-Syrian initiative plans to open a German school in Damascus in Spring 2027, although not all classes would be available initially. Establishing a German school in Damascus would serve as a practical support mechanism for repatriation, as many Syrians in Germany who genuinely want to return are currently prevented from doing so due to the lack of adequate German schools for their children there.
