Christoph Heusgen, the former head of the Munich Security Conference, has sharply criticized US President Donald Trump regarding the announced withdrawal of 5,000 US soldiers from Germany. He described the reaction to this potential withdrawal as the action of an egomaniac who cannot tolerate criticism.
Heusgen stated during an interview with “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” that the US presence in Germany serves crucial American interests. He pointed out that the US Command for Europe and Africa is stationed here, Ramstein serves as an essential air base for the logistical support of American troops deployed overseas, and the vital military hospital in Landstuhl is necessary for initial care of US deployed forces. According to him, an American troop withdrawal from Germany would ultimately harm US interests.
Looking at Trump’s history, Heusgen added that the President had previously threatened troop reductions in Europe during his first term. However, he noted that, in reality, more US soldiers ended up being stationed in Europe than when he first took office. Therefore, he advised a degree of calm, warning that Europe “should not jump at every opportunity” presented by Trump.
