Susanne Seehofer, a politician belonging to the FDP, has publicly offered her support for the new party leader, Wolfgang Kubicki. Speaking to Spiegel, the Bavarian liberal stated that Kubicki is clearly the elected new federal chairman of the FDP and asserted that it is now the duty of all members to support him if the party is to regain success.
This statement follows the recent federal party congress, where Kubicki was unexpectedly challenged by fellow party member Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. Strack-Zimmermann ultimately received just under 40 percent of the votes.
Seehofer emphasized that the party must convince voters and actively engage with political opponents from other parties, arguing that energy should be directed toward these efforts. The deputy head of the Bavarian FDP cautioned against anyone who might exacerbate internal strife or unnecessarily highlight disagreements between party members, stating that those doing so misunderstand what has been achieved for the FDP. She stressed that the current situation is not merely about minor issues, but fundamentally about the party’s survival.
The 35-year-old Seehofer was herself re-elected to the presidium at the party congress, securing the second-highest result. She is the daughter of the former CSU chairman and Bavarian Minister-President, Horst Seehofer.
