The fuel station association stated that the removal of the fuel discount is not surprising, and they anticipate that the price of gasoline will settle at two euros in the medium term. According to association spokesperson Heribert Rabl, “We expected nothing else,” speaking to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition). He added that politicians cannot continuously finance a portion of the profits made by the oil and gas corporations.
Following the termination of the 17-cent subsidy at the end of the month, Rabl predicted that the price for both diesel and petrol would stabilize around two euros. Both the corporations and the market had anticipated that this price level would now become permanent. Rabl also noted that inflation is expected to persist after the fuel discount ends. Furthermore, the spokesperson revealed that the mineral oil companies have earned more profits this year than ever before, particularly in the German market.
However, Rabl cautioned against reversing the 12-hour regulation. He instead argued that a tightening of the rules would be necessary, emphasizing, “What we need at the gas station is a stable, predictable atmosphere in the sales area.”
