In response to the heatwave currently affecting Germany, Kirsten Fehrs, the Chairwoman of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), has urged people to take shelter in the cool spaces of church buildings.
Speaking to the “Rheinische Post,” Fehrs emphasized that thousands of people die annually in Germany as a result of extreme heat, underscoring that heat poses a serious danger to health and life. She specifically warned that elderly people, children, and those who are ill require protection and attention during hot days.
Fehrs stressed that many local congregations have participated in the “Cool Churches” campaign by opening their doors. She explained that “neighborliness also shows itself in protecting people from the consequences of extreme heat.” The churches are providing those in need with a place to rest, catch their breath, and seek refuge from the heat. She concluded by stating that Christian responsibility involves supporting those who are dependent on help.
