German Government Skips AfD Ban Amidst Constitutional Doubts, Opts for Democratic Solutions

Despite a recently presented expert opinion alleging the AfD is unconstitutional, the Federal Government currently sees no reason to initiate its own ban request against the party. Vice governmental spokesman Sebastian Hille stated to the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Friday that while the government is fundamentally interested in what occurs in the country, the report does not change their overall assessment.

Instead of pursuing a party ban, the government intends to address the nation’s problems and challenges, demonstrating that the democratic center is capable of making the necessary decisions. The goal is to persuade citizens to vote for the “democratic center.”

The legal opinion, which claims to prove the AfD’s unconstitutionality, was presented by the “Society for Civil Rights” (GFF) yesterday to significant media interest. Immediately following this presentation, all other parties represented in the Bundestag called for an attempt to secure an AfD ban through the Federal Constitutional Court. Both the Federal Council and the Bundestag, in addition to the federal government, have the authority to file such a motion.
