German Government Urges Swift Bulgarian Government Formation Amid Political Uncertainty

Following the parliamentary election in Bulgaria, the German federal government is banking on a swift formation of a government. A spokesperson for the Foreign Office told the dts Nachrichtenagentur on Monday that they hope a stable government can be established quickly in Sofia. The spokesperson emphasized that reliable partners are needed within the European Union to tackle the numerous challenges the continent faces together, especially during difficult times.

In this context, the German government is awaiting the formation of the Bulgarian administration. When asked whether the German government anticipates blockades at the EU level from the election winner, Rumen Radew-who is considered pro-Russian-the spokesperson stated that such expectations were purely speculative at this time. The spokesperson added that, fundamentally, Germany assumes that it is possible, as it has been in the past, to maintain a strong and united European standpoint while also ensuring a strong NATO and a capable Ukraine.

The election held on Sunday saw the election alliance of former head of state Radew achieve a surprisingly significant victory. After counting the majority of the votes, they garnered approximately 44.7 percent of the total votes, which likely secures an absolute majority in parliament. The conservative Gerb-SDS alliance received around 13.4 percent, while the third-place liberal-conservative PP-DB alliance secured 12.7 percent.
