The use of virtual reality (VR) goggles is on the rise in Germany. According to a survey conducted by the IT industry association Bitkom, 35 percent of people aged 16 and older in Germany have now used a VR headset at least once, up from 28 percent in the previous year. Furthermore, 43 percent of people stated they would like to use such a headset, bringing the total percentage of individuals open to virtual reality to 78 percent.
Younger demographics are the most active in adopting this technology. Among those aged 16 to 29, a majority of 57 percent have already used a VR headset, while this figure stands at 45 percent for those aged 30 to 49. The participation rate drops to 30 percent among the 50- to 64-year-old group, and only 14 percent for individuals over 65. However, interest remains strong across all age groups: 56 percent of people over 65 have never used a VR headset but wish to do so.
Despite the rising interest, VR headsets have yet to become a regular part of daily life for most users. Among those who have used the technology, only 12 percent do so at least once per week, and another 17 percent use them multiple times a month. The largest group by far-63 percent of VR users-only use the headset once a month or less frequently.
Bitkom Research gathered the data from 1,164 individuals in Germany aged 16 and older via telephone, including 403 reported VR users. The survey took place between the 20th and 24th week of 2026.
