German Ministry Presses Advantage of Academic Freedom to Attract Top American Scientists

Federal Minister for Research, Dorothee Bär (CSU), announced her goal of attracting more American scientists to Germany. Speaking to “Welt TV” she emphasized that academic freedom serves as a critical selling point in the international competition for top researchers.

Bär noted that the German government is actively marketing Germany to American academics, highlighting the “1,000-Heads-Plus Program” which provides international scientists the opportunity to conduct research within the country. According to her, these efforts have already been successful, having secured 300 individuals, including researchers from the United States, of the target 1,000. Bär cited Germany’s constitution (Grundgesetz) as a unique asset, noting that the country permanently enshrines academic freedom-a guarantee few other nations possess. She concluded with a warm welcome to all international researchers.

In a contrasting development, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) expressed criticism regarding educational opportunities in the United States at the Catholic Church convention. Merz advised his children against studying or working in the US, citing what he described as a sudden deterioration of the social climate there. He also pointed out that job opportunities are increasingly difficult even for the most highly qualified Americans.
