Sinan Selen, the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, along with the presidents of the sixteen state offices for the protection of the constitution, are set to meet for a three-day consultation from Wednesday to Friday. This information, reported by “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland” citing security circles, suggests that discussions regarding the AfD will occur. While the State Parliament election in Saxony-Anhalt resulted in an AfD victory, making an AfD government takeover highly likely, sources noted that this meeting was scheduled well in advance and is not solely a reaction to the electoral outcome.
According to certain circles within the Union, no national safeguards have yet been put in place to protect security agencies against a potential AfD government takeover, largely due to requests from the currently governing CDU/FDP administration in Magdeburg. However, these measures can be quickly implemented, and an inter-ministerial meeting of Interior Ministers is anticipated within the next two weeks.
Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU) of Bavaria told RND that Interior Ministers will continue to coordinate closely in the coming weeks given the general security situation. He confirmed that the situation in Saxony-Anhalt will certainly be discussed during these talks, but he stressed that public speculation about individual aspects is premature while the government formation process is still ongoing.
