Christoph Ahlhaus (CDU), the CEO of the Federal Association for Medium-Sized Businesses, sharply criticized the federal government for considering the removal of a public holiday as a measure to boost the economy. Ahlhaus told RTL and ntv that the idea was “quite uninspired”. He added that if the federal government has no other ideas, apart from cancelling holidays, it is truly a “certificate of poverty”. Such proposals would only create new frustration, according to the representative for small and medium-sized enterprises, who emphasized that Germany is a federally organized country and thrives “on cultural diversity”.
