Germany Defeated by Ecuador in World Cup Group Stage After Early Lead

Germany ended its campaign in World Cup Group E with a 1-2 defeat against Ecuador. In parallel action within the same group, Ivory Coast secured a 2-0 victory over Curaçao.

The match between Germany and Ecuador started with a quick goal for Germany in the second minute, scored by Leroy Sané from a left-footed strike, assisted by Florian Wirtz. According to various statistical experts, this marked the earliest German goal in a World Cup since 1934. However, Ecuador quickly responded, equalizing in the ninth minute when Nilson Angulo struck from distance, leaving Manuel Neuer in the German net no chance.

Prior to the evening’s football, Germany’s advancement to the knockout stage was already certain. Meanwhile, Ecuador needed a win to reach the Round of 16. The South American team played aggressively and powerfully, posing increasingly significant problems for the German side. Even Deniz Undav, introduced as a “game-changer” in the 60th minute, was unable to find a way to score.

Ecuador intensified its pressure and converted it into the winning goal in the 78th minute. Following a corner kick, an Ecuadorian player extended the cross, positioning Gonzalo Plata perfectly to send the ball into the net with a left-footed shot. German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer appeared troubled by this late goal.

Despite the result, Germany-whose qualification was established before the game even began-is the winner of World Cup Group E. Ivory Coast will also advance to the knockout phase as the group’s second-placed team. Ecuador now holds three points and is in third place, which is sufficient for them to also proceed. Curaçao, unfortunately, will be eliminated.
