Federal, state, and municipal authorities, along with network operators, have agreed on the need for faster expansion of fiber optic and mobile networks. An official statement of intent, titled “The Best Network for Germany,” was signed on Monday.
Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU) presented the document in Berlin. This paper outlines measurable goals for network expansion, aiming to enhance “transparency regarding progress and challenges in the rollout and the market situation.”
Key metrics agreed upon include the pace of expansion, the duration of approval processes, the level of investment, and the utilization of digital procedures. Wildberger hopes that this initiative will reduce bureaucracy and establish reliable frameworks necessary for a quicker deployment of fiber and mobile networks.
The goal of “The Best Network for Germany” is to be geared toward “the needs of citizens and businesses.” It must be available “everywhere it is needed-in daily life, while traveling, in both rural and urban areas.” Furthermore, the network should function “stably and without interruptions,” even under high load or in challenging locations. Performance and bandwidth must meet the “actual demand,” and the network should “grow proactively with requirements”-both for private and commercial use.
The technologies utilized should be sustainable and ensure usability for future applications. Open access is mandated to enable a variety of products and services, allowing customers to choose among different providers for both fixed-line and mobile connections. Switching providers must be simple. Products, services, and prices must be “descriptively clear,” and customer service must be “reliable, easily accessible, and fast.”
