Following US President Donald Trump’s abandonment of the Iran agreement, the Green party anticipates that the two German Navy ships in the region will be redeployed back to Germany. Sara Nanni, the parliamentary faction’s spokesperson for defense policy, told Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (Thursday editions) that she expects the crews of the minesweeper Fulda and the supply ship Mosel to spend the summer back in Germany. Nanni stressed that anything other than a return would be a surprise, stating she could not foresee the ships remaining on site indefinitely while waiting for a miracle. Given that the crews would need to return regardless in September, she concluded that there would be no viable political agreement or responsible mandate from the Bundestag by that time.
Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD faction’s foreign policy spokesperson, also suggested that a withdrawal is a possibility. Speaking to newspapers, he characterized the ceasefire as extremely fragile, asserting that the coalition parties’ initial restraint in approving a Bundeswehr mission was appropriate given the current conflict status. The fate of the two vessels, he noted, must be assessed daily based on the local security situation, and all options, including the withdrawal of the Mosel and Fulda, must be put on the table.
The Bundeswehr’s minesweeper Fulda and supply ship Mosel are currently awaiting a potential deployment in the Strait of Hormuz, with the goal of restoring safe commercial shipping conditions. However, the prerequisites for such an operation-a ceasefire and consent from Iran-are currently not met.
