Green party leader Franziska Brantner stated that in light of the announced partial withdrawal of US troops, relying on U.S. President Donald Trump for foreign policy is highly risky. Speaking to the news portal T-Online, Brantner argued that this troop reduction serves as evidence of the danger inherent in depending on Trump concerning defense matters. Furthermore, she criticized CDU Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alleging a deficiency in leadership. According to Brantner, Merz has provided little more than hesitation and inconsistency-both with Washington and across Europe. She emphasized that Germany requires a clearly defined direction, advocating instead for “increased European cooperation and the determined establishment of a common European defense”.
