Greens Blame CDU’s Merz for Poor Management as Trump Threatens US Troop Withdrawal

Greens politician Sara Nanni has directly accused CDU leader Friedrich Merz of failing to adequately manage US President Donald Trump’s threat to withdraw American troops from Germany. Speaking to the news portal “T-Online” Nanni asserted that the “open threat” from Trump was entirely avoidable if clear, honest discussions had taken place behind the scenes. She emphasized the structural necessity of the relationship, stating that the United States needs NATO, and NATO, in turn, needs the United States. According to Nanni, it is time for someone to clearly communicate this reality to Trump.

Beyond the immediate issue of troop withdrawal, Nanni challenged Merz, arguing that instead of constantly lamenting the difficult times facing the country, he must utilize the potential power he could wield as Chancellor for the sake of Germany’s national interests. She forcefully insisted that Trump’s “vague and dismissive threat” needed to be countered intelligently.

The Greens lawmaker further criticized the ruling government, expressing concern that despite Trump being in office since January 2025, the administration still lacks a coherent strategy for managing his documented political unreliability. She urged the Merz government to move beyond a pattern of alternating between superficial gestures of conciliation and hardline stances, and instead, focus on developing a true, actionable strategy.
