Katharina Dröge, the faction leader of the Green Party, has sharply criticized Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz for remaining silent and inactive in the face of the climate crisis. Speaking to RTL and ntv, Dröge suggested that Merz seems to be hoping that when he is on holiday and doesn’t have anyone watching, no one will even consider that he might be responsible for combating the crisis. She accused him of acting as though he could evade the issue entirely.
Dröge highlighted the harsh reality of the current situation-brutal heat, thousands of deaths, burning forests, dried-out rivers, and failing crops-all happening now. Despite these grave realities, she pointed out that the federal government, under his leadership, is deciding on legislation in the cabinet that actually works to slow down renewable energy. She deemed this policy “fatal and irresponsible.”
When asked about the length of his vacation, Dröge maintained that the real question is what he will do upon his return. She insisted that Merz must take decisive action to address the climate crisis rather than, as she sees it, exacerbating it. According to her, his actions thus far have ultimately worsened the climate emergency.
