Franziska Brantner, co-chair of the Green party, has called for an expansion of the EU Blocking Statute to address the recent US sanctions targeting the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, she stated that the strength of law is what protects everyone from violence and arbitrary action.
Brantner urged the German federal government to strongly advocate for the withdrawal of the US sanctions and to adopt concrete measures to protect the International Criminal Court. These measures include ensuring the Court’s institutional and financial operational capability and extending the EU Blocking Regulation specifically to cover the US sanctions against the judiciary.
The objective of amending the Blocking Regulation is to prevent European companies from ending their business relationships with the ICC solely due to the implications of the US sanctions. Brantner concluded by asserting that the law and its institutions must be as robust as those that defend them.
