The head of the Greens, Felix Banaszak, has warned SPD Minister-President Manuela Schwesig against continuing her election campaign in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern by framing it as a direct duel against the AFD. “We have to say it clearly: a red-red coalition will not achieve a majority on its own,” Banaszak told the news portal T-Online. “If Manuela Schwesig seriously believes that, she is vastly mistaken. The train has already left the station.”
Currently, Schwesig’s SPD is governing in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern alongside the Left party. Polls currently show that the two-party alliance cannot win a renewed majority. Banaszak stressed that only with the Greens could a “stable democratic government” be possible in the Schwerin State Parliament, suggesting a Red-Red-Green configuration.
Calling out her strategy, Banaszak stated, “Without us Greens, Manuela Schwesig would be a queen without a kingdom.” He added that while it is regrettable to watch, he cannot stop her from repeating the error made by Dietmar Woidke (SPD) during the 2024 election. This reference points to the Brandenburg election, where Woidke also focused his campaign on a showdown with the AfD.
With the vote set for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in a little over a week, Schwesig is running under the slogan, “The woman against the Blue.” Banaszak countered this approach, asserting that “the people of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can choose to reject this calculus of Manuela Schwesig.”
