Thüringen Linke Pushes Berlin SPD and Greens to Resume Coalition Talks Amid Antisemitism Dispute

Christian Schaft, the faction leader of the Thuringian Left party, is urging the Social Democrats (SPD) to resume negotiations amid the disruption of exploratory talks in Berlin. Schaft stated to the “Rheinische Post” (Thursday edition) that the Berlin Left has reached a clear agreement with the SPD and the Greens regarding the fight against antisemitism.

The spokesperson emphasized that the Linke faction has also officially committed to combating antisemitism, protecting Jewish life, and upholding the right to existence of Israel. Given these commitments, Schaft hopes that the tentative talks between the SPD and the Greens will be restarted soon.

He added that the residents of Berlin are waiting for solutions to their pressing issues, believing that only a council led by the left can offer a genuine path toward an affordable life and a serious challenge to rent gouging.

The exploratory discussions were interrupted on Tuesday, following the founding meeting of the Linke faction in the Berlin House of Representatives. The interruption stemmed from a disagreement over two distinct interpretations regarding how to address the fight against antisemitism.
