Health Reform Negotiations Continue Despite Political Critique Ahead of Cabinet Vote

The ongoing debate concerning the planned healthcare reform, spearheaded by Minister Nina Warken of the CDU, continues rapidly even before a potential cabinet resolution. According to a health ministry spokesperson speaking to the dpa on Monday, internal government deliberations are still underway. Despite this, the spokesperson expressed optimism that the draft bill could be presented to the cabinet board on Wednesday. However, the possibility of short-notice alterations to the preparatory draft, which was recently about 160 pages long, cannot be ruled out before it enters the parliamentary process.

Criticism surrounding the proposed healthcare spending cuts surfaced over the weekend, coming from various sources, including social organizations, as well as political groups like the CDU and the SPD. For instance, Karl-Josef Laumann, the CDU Minister of Health for North Rhine-Westphalia, demanded increased funding to secure benefits for recipients of basic citizen income (Bürgergeld). Separately, the SPD General Secretary called for greater financial contributions from pharmaceutical corporations. Meanwhile, the Green Party parliamentary group plans to use a closed-door session on Tuesday to pass a counter-proposal.
