Heat Records Prompt Greens to Demand Major Overhaul of Germany’s Climate Protection Policy

Following the heat records set over the weekend, the Green party has demanded that the federal government introduces a new climate protection program. Lisa Badum, the climate policy spokesperson for the Green faction in the Bundestag, told dts Nachrichtenagentur in Berlin on Monday that Environmental Minister Carsten Schneider (SPD) must “align his plans with reality.”

While she welcome the environment minister acknowledging the economic damage caused by the recent heat, Badum insisted that the climate protection program needs to be rewritten to be both socially fairer and more effective from a climate perspective, mirroring the strong recommendations of the Greens’ own experts.

The Greens also argued that the SPD’s willingness to approve the building modernization law goes against established climate goals, specifically noting that oil and gas heating systems after 2045 could be unconstitutional.

Previously, Schneider had described rising temperatures in a newspaper interview as an economic risk. The environmental minister admitted that the heat wave causes enormous damage to the national economy, expressing particular concern over water availability.
