SPD politician Hubertus Heil stated that he does not preclude himself from running for the party leadership. Speaking to ARD on Sunday, he clarified that this depends entirely on the direction the SPD chooses to take as a whole. When asked about a potential co-candidate, he declined to name any individuals, emphasizing that the most crucial element is for the SPD to first clarify its political direction internally. He stressed that the party must stand for a “solidary performance society,” meaning it must ensure that effort, work, and engagement are valued throughout the country.
Switching focus to regional politics, Heil expressed significant skepticism regarding a potential coalition with the party derailing the Left (Linke) in the next Berlin state government. He stated he has “considerable doubts” about the Berlin Left’s readiness to govern, asserting that the way the Left acts in Berlin raises serious questions about its governing capacity.
Regarding the prospects for a federal coalition involving the current parties, Heil indicated that discussing options outside of the next federal election is premature. He maintained that “everything is open” for the future. Ultimately, he concluded that all democratic parties need to strengthen themselves overall if they are to create enough momentum for multiple future options.
