Following Germany’s failure to secure a seat on the UN Security Council, the state government of Hessian is advocating for a reduction in German financial support to the United Nations. Manfred Pentz, Hesse’s Minister for International Affairs (CDU), told the newspaper “Bild” that since one of the world’s largest economies would not have a seat at the table when crucial decisions are being made, the rationale for continuing such substantial investment into the UN is questionable, especially given that Germany is one of the largest global financial contributors. Pentz further argued that it is illogical to contribute heavily if Germany is subsequently stripped of the influence it should rightfully command. In fact, in 2024, Germany was the second-largest financial donor to the UN, contributing approximately 4.4 billion euros.
