FDP head Henning Höne is putting forward a candidate for the position of party general secretary in the running for the federal chairman of the Free Democrats (FDP). Should he win the chairmanship election, Höne intends to propose the Baden-Württemberg politician Alena Trauschel for the role.
Speaking to “Der Spiegel”, Höne expressed his pleasure that Trauschel, a young woman with parliamentary experience, wishes to take on greater responsibility for the FDP. According to Höne, Trauschel represents “a new beginning” and this is why he plans to nominate her as the FDP’s general secretary if he secures the party leadership.
The 27-year-old politician was successfully elected as the youngest member to the Southwest Parliament in 2021. Höne himself will compete against Wolfgang Kubicki at the FDP federal party convention scheduled for late May. If Kubicki wins, he has stated his intention to appoint former Bavarian state and faction leader Martin Hagen as the general secretary.
Commenting to “Der Spiegel”, Trauschel emphasized that in a world dominated by vocal populists on both the left and the right, a thoughtful reform party is needed-one with a comprehensive view of the entire country, rather than one that pits groups against each other. She argued that only the FDP can fulfill this role for her. Furthermore, Höne intends to propose the Bavarian Liberal Susanne Seehofer and the Hamburg European Member of Parliament Svenja Hahn for the new party presidency.
