Iran Strait Escalation Threatens Global Trade, Warns German Minister Reiche

Federal Economics Minister Katherina Reiche (CDU) has warned that a renewed escalation in the Strait of Hormuz could severely impact global trade. Speaking to publications from the Funk media group, Reiche characterized the situation in the maritime choke point as deeply concerning, suggesting that it is likely to generate new uncertainty in world markets and drive up prices.

She stressed the critical importance of all involved parties reaching an agreement promptly, stating that the common goal must be the establishment of free and safe shipping through the Strait.

In a related development, U.S. President Donald Trump previously announced on his Truth Social platform that the U.S. military would prevent “ships of Iran or its clients” from entering or leaving. Furthermore, the United States would immediately impose a 20 percent levy on all cargo transport for all other commercial vessels. The Strait of Hormuz remains a vital international shipping lane for the global trade of oil and liquefied natural gas, and its navigability has been severely compromised since the start of the conflict.
