Jewish Council Leader Endorses Ilse Aigner for Presidency, Cites Need for Unity in Germany

The President of the Central Council of Jews stated that he considers CSU politician Ilse Aigner “absolutely suitable” for the office of Federal President. Speaking to ARD, he said he would view her as a good choice, though he cautioned that the suitability of other potential candidates could not be ruled out. Schuster did not name any other suitable candidates. Generally, he expects the new president to unite various political factions, both on the left and the right, aiming not to amplify existing conflicts, but rather to balance them out and build bridges between parties.

Regarding the outcome of the elections in Israel, Schuster expressed restraint. He has repeatedly voiced criticism of the Netanyahu government in the past, specifically targeting ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich. When asked if he wished for a significant political shift in the election results, Schuster responded, “Life is no wish concert. That is the essence of democracy. The voter has spoken.”

From Schuster’s perspective, a change in Israeli government could be beneficial for German-Israeli relations. He noted that there are remarks, particularly from the two far-right ministers, that are “in no way understandable and in no way acceptable to me.” He believes that if such tones disappear from government circles, it could significantly ease joint action and common planning. Schuster cited peace efforts as an example of shared plans that are necessary on both sides, adding that Germany plays an indirect mediating role. This role would become easier if the “disruptive statements of the radical ministers disappear.”
