Germany’s Tourism Trips Higher to Record High, But August Nights Show Slight Decline

According to preliminary figures released on Friday by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), accommodation providers in Germany recorded 58.7 million overnight stays from both national and foreign guests in August 2026. This figure represented a slight decrease of 1.1 percent when compared to August 2025.

In August 2026, the number of stays by domestic travelers fell by 1.6 percent to 48.8 million. Conversely, stays by international guests rose by 1.3 percent, reaching 9.9 million.

Overall, between January and August 2026, accommodation businesses recorded a total of 340.8 million overnight stays. This figure constitutes a 0.5 percent increase compared to the same period last year, and it surpasses the previous record set in 2024 (339.4 million stays). When comparing the year-to-date period to 2025, the number of domestic stays increased by 0.4 percent to 283.8 million. For foreign guests, accommodation stays rose by 1.0 percent, totaling 57.0 million.
