FDP leader Wolfgang Kubicki stated that the SPD’s plan to institutionalize climate adaptation within the Basic Law is unnecessary. He told the “Rheinische Post” that the protection of natural resources is already enshrined as a state objective in the Basic Law. Kubicki suggested that the SPD’s primary motive is to formalize climate adaptation as a collective responsibility so that the federal government can co-finance tasks performed by the states. However, Kubicki characterized the proposal fundamentally as “the usual SPD debt populism.” He further criticized the party by saying that even a “tangible educational campaign” to prevent forest fires would cost only half a million euros, contrasting this with the “Lars Klingbeil” had contracted last year for video and photo services benefiting his own image, using taxpayer money.
