Trump Advisor Criticizes European Leadership, Warning Leaders Must Show Strength Against US President

Anthony Scaramucci, the former communications director for US President Donald Trump, asserts that the strategy employed by European state and government leaders in dealing with Trump is incorrect. Speaking to “Welt am Sonntag”, Scaramucci stated that leaders “must act assertively toward him,” adding that Trump “respects no one who does not.”

He specifically criticized Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte, identifying two different approaches to dealing with Trump: Rutte’s and Mark Carney’s. According to Scaramucci, Carney handles interactions with Trump better. He argued that adopting a hesitant or overly flattering approach, akin to Rutte’s, simply results in a loss of Trump’s respect, offering no gain in return.

While many European heads of state have previously responded to Trump’s verbal attacks by accommodating his requests, Nato leadership is seen as highly focused on maintaining a harmonious image to keep the military alliance intact. In contrast, Canadian Prime Minister Carney has remained unyielding in disputes with the United States, such as the recent trade disagreements.

Scaramucci also strongly criticized Trump’s recent rapprochement with Moscow, voicing a severe suspicion that the US President was “doing things with Putin.” He believed that Trump had been “compromised” by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, adding that it was impossible for a US President to act as Trump did without being compromised.

This criticism stems from circumstances in mid-October when Trump announced a deal with the Kremlin regarding the delivery of several million tons of diesel, despite the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Shortly thereafter, he suspended the sanctions against Russia, which had been passed by Congress. Scaramucci criticized the Republican members of Congress for “doing nothing to prevent this or to rebuke Trump.”

Scaramucci, who only served as Donald Trump’s communications director for ten days in July 2017, now stands out as one of the sharpest critics of the former US President.
