Leipzig Beats Eindhoven; Bayern and Viking Share Dramatic 3-3 Draw in Champions League

RB Leipzig managed to secure its first points in the competition on the second matchday of the Champions League League Phase, defeating PSV Eindhoven 1-0. Meanwhile, in a parallel fixture, FC Bayern Munich ended in a 3-3 draw against Norwegian champions Viking FK.

In Leipzig, the only goal finally came late in the game. PSV Eindhoven had a chance to take the lead early, resulting in a penalty after a handball was spotted on Ridle Baku via video review. However, RB goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt saved Ivan Perisic’s shot. For much of the match, PSV keeper Matej Kovar made numerous strong saves to keep his team in contention. The decisive goal was scored by Brajan Gruda in the 75th minute. Receiving the ball at the edge of the penalty area from a poorly cleared corner, he struck it-slightly deflected-into the net. A subsequent header by Armando Obispo for Eindhoven was disallowed. Leipzig’s victory means they gain their first points in the tournament after suffering a 1-4 defeat in their opening match in Como.

On the artificial turf at the Lyse Arena, Bayern fell behind within the first two minutes. Gianni Stensness scored the opening goal (1-0) for the hosts following a corner kick delivered by Zlatko Tripic. Although Bayern maintained control of the ball for much of the subsequent period, they struggled to penetrate the deep Norwegian defense. Viking then launched a counter-attack after a turnover from Tom Bischof, and Peter Christiansen doubled the lead in the 38th minute, making it 2-0.

Harry Kane reduced the deficit in the 54th minute from the penalty spot. After a VAR review, referee Georgi Kabakov confirmed a foul committed by Kristoffer Haugen on Konrad Laimer. Just six minutes later, Kane equalized (60th minute) with a header after a cross from Joshua Kimmich. Luis Diaz, who had just seen a goal disallowed, put the visitors ahead in the 71st minute, benefitting from setup work by Laimer. This lead was short-lived, however, as Herman Haugen scored for Viking in the 90th minute, making the final score 3-3.
