Katalin Gennburg, the fraktion’s spokeswoman on construction policy, criticized the Federal Government’s planned action to reduce building costs, stating that the government is missing the most significant challenge facing affordable new construction: land prices. Speaking to the news portal “T-Online,” Gennburg requested information from the government regarding the scope of increases in building land prices.
The Federal Government’s responses revealed significant cost increases. For instance, the price per square meter of building land was approximately 244 euros in 2021, but had risen to 283 euros by 2024. The Ministry of Construction noted that the land statistics were methodically redesigned, meaning the values since 2021 can only be partially compared with previous years.
The politician from Die Linke urged the Federal Government to introduce a cap on land prices. “Land prices must decrease if we want to create socially and ecologically functional cities and municipalities and enable affordable new construction,” Gennburg asserted, arguing that the government’s current approach is incorrect. She added that instead of regulating market prices, the government’s initiatives, such as the “construction turbo” and the Building Code amendment, are effectively mobilizing more private building land.
