The legal plans announced by Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to ban the expropriation of housing companies have drawn sharp criticism from the Left party. Sören Pellmann, the party’s faction leader, told the “Rheinische Post”: “The Chancellor is turning his back on the tenants across the country in the coldest manner possible. He once again shows that he is miles away from the people’s plight.” Pellmann further added that instead of acknowledging that his policies of social cuts and inaction were rejected twice yesterday, the Chancellor is now taking an even more drastic step. He stressed: “No chancellor has ever been as brazen as Merz, supporting the interests of rent profiteers and abandoning people facing housing and rental crises.” According to the Left politician, people desire political action against the increasing pressure from exploding rents. Previously, the leadership of the Union and the SPD coalition at the federal level had agreed in July to legislate a federal rule that would prevent the nationalization of private rental housing stock through state-level socialization laws. Merz stated that they would push this legislative initiative forward and reach a decision in “a relatively quick” timeframe.
