Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas suggested that Russia’s actions in Europe stem from deep-rooted geopolitical objectives. Speaking to the “Security Sunday” podcast by “Politico,” Kaunas stated that Russia’s core aim is the reconstruction of its empire. He described Moscow as currently testing NATO’s resilience and attempting to intimidate Western societies, observing that “Russia is escalating.”
The minister pointed to a series of hybrid attacks targeting Lithuania, noting that Russia is testing Western unity, disseminating disinformation campaigns, using migrants as pressure tools, and is linked to drone operations from Belarus and acts of sabotage. According to Kaunas, the ultimate goal is to undermine support for Ukraine, with Russia intending to “take all of Ukraine and integrate it into Russia and begin the rebuilding of the Soviet Union.”
On the matter of NATO cooperation, Kaunas highlighted Germany as a prime example of strengthening cooperation in Lithuania. He confirmed that he has full assurance that the German brigade will be deployed by the end of 2027, noting that Lithuania is heavily investing in accommodation for the approximately 5,000 German soldiers and their families, essentially building a “small city.” The minister refuted reports suggesting difficulties in personnel recruitment within Germany, reaffirming his commitment that the process would be fully and punctually realized. With up to 2,000 German soldiers already in Lithuania, the process has officially begun.
Looking toward the eastern flank of NATO, Kaunas emphasized the vital importance of the German presence. He asserted that this deployment sends a “strong message to Russia that they shouldn’t even think about moving towards Nato territory.” He defined the forward presence as the “real defense of every single square centimeter of NATO.”
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Kaunas reiterated that the minister would not offer assurances of peace before a Russian attack. Reflecting on the conflict’s suddenness, he said, “In 2020 or 2021, nobody thought that was possible,” arguing that Europe must continue to rely on deterrence. He insisted that to prevent any form of military aggression, strength must be built.
He identified air defense as the most pressing current challenge, noting that the capability gap exists “in all countries.” The minister maintains a close link between the security of Europe and the United States, stating that the US is a “crucial partner for our security, for Europe’s security, for the security of the eastern flank.” Furthermore, he stressed that any peace agreement for Ukraine must be reached “according to the rules of Ukraine, not according to Putin’s rules.”
Finally, while calling for increased assistance for Kyiv ahead of the winter, Kaunas urged both Europe and NATO to send “weapons and ammunition” and expand their support, clearly stating, “Russia started the war, not Ukraine. We must support them.”
