Malta Labour Party Secures Fourth Consecutive Term Amid Economic Success

Based on projections released on Sunday, the Labour Party in Malta appears to have secured a historic fourth consecutive term in the recent parliamentary elections. Prime Minister Robert Abela is thus expected to achieve another electoral victory, holding a comfortable lead and likely maintaining his position of power.

Abela and his party had campaigned on a platform of emphasizing economic stability. This focus comes after Malta recorded the fastest GDP growth in the EU last year, achieving four percent growth. The country currently benefits from very low inflation and minimal unemployment.

Abela had announced the snap elections shortly before the vote, citing current geopolitical tensions as the reason his government needed to secure a new mandate a year ahead of schedule. The Prime Minister has been in office since 2020, concurrently serving as the chairman of the socialist governing party. Prior to the election, there were no signs of significant public dissent, despite the opposition Nationalist Party catching Abela somewhat off guard with the advance call for an election.
