Christian Görke, the interior policy spokesperson for the Left faction in the Bundestag, has criticized Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) following Merz’s initial post on the short-form communication platform X after the German national football team was eliminated from the World Cup.
Speaking to “Die Welt” (Wednesday edition), Görke stated that the Chancellor “must have seen a different game,” adding that it once again highlights Merz’s skewed perception of reality. Görke further noted that Merz’s view of the situation in Germany is at least peculiar. He suggested that Merz’s perspective is so detached that he appears to believe that people in Germany are not working enough and are instead taking too much sick leave.
Merz had previously posted on X that despite the disappointment of the elimination, “What a game,” praising the DFB team for inspiring the country through their effort and team spirit, and declaring, “We are proud of you.” Following this criticism, Merz elaborated that successes should be celebrated collaboratively, and that the nation must stand together in defeat. He concluded that those wearing the eagle on their chest deserve backing, not scorn.
