Merz Declares Non-Interference on DFB’s Coach Crisis Amid World Cup Fallout

Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has stated that he will not offer any advice or tips regarding the coaching situation of the German national team following their early exit from the World Cup. Deputy government spokesman Sebastian Hille confirmed the stance on Wednesday, stressing that the Chancellor’s role is focused on governmental matters. Hille pointed out that managing and processing the World Cup tournament is solely the responsibility of the German Football Association (DFB). “I am quite sure they will do so, and they do not require any advice from the Chancellor for that,” Hille added.

Regarding the DFB team’s defeat against Paraguay, Hille noted that while the Chancellor is naturally disappointed, he had admittedly held out a little more hope. Further, the government spokesman addressed Merz’s later highly positive tweet following the Round of 16 loss, labeling it a “communication failure,” as the post had generated irritation among many soccer fans given the national team’s weak performance. The context of the situation remains that Germany was surprisingly knocked out by Paraguay in the penalty shootout on Monday, and the future employment of coach Julian Nagelsmann has yet to be determined.
