Merz Reaffirms German Solidarity with Zelensky After Discussing Russian Attacks and Energy Support

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) held a telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday, a fact communicated later that evening by government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius.

During the call, Zelenskyy informed the Chancellor about the massive Russian aerial attacks that took place over the past weekend, targeting civilian areas and Ukrainian energy infrastructure. In response, the Chancellor reiterated Germany’s steadfast solidarity with the Ukrainian people.

The President expressed his gratitude to the Chancellor for the German military support and the assistance provided in the critical energy sector over the winter. According to Kornelius, the Chancellor and President agreed that the responsibility for establishing a ceasefire for the entire energy infrastructure now rests with Russia.

Furthermore, the Chancellor and President also exchanged views regarding efforts to achieve a lasting peace. They agreed to continue close coordination and consultation with both European and transatlantic partners.
