Misereor Warns Against Aid Cuts, Urges Focus on Peace and Development Over Military Spending

The Catholic aid organization Misereor has called upon the German government to intensify its efforts concerning global peace and diplomatic conflict resolution.

During the presentation of the aid organization’s annual report, Andreas Frick, Misereor’s Managing Director, emphasized the severe global consequences resulting from ongoing crises and wars, citing regions such as the Middle East, Sudan, and the Congo. He stated that the number of people driven into hunger by armed conflicts has nearly doubled in recent years, adding that economic interests should not prevent pressure from being applied to responsible global actors.

Frick specifically criticized the unilateral focus on military expenditures while development budgets are being cut. According to him, peace is not achieved solely through military deterrence but rather in places where people have opportunities and where hunger is being addressed. He stressed that these cuts are not trimming minor expenses; rather, they “undermine exactly those foundations that enable long-term security,” labeling this approach as “strategically short-sighted.”

Misereor had received approximately 234 million euros in 2025, including funds from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. The organization currently supports more than 1,600 partner organizations in over 80 countries worldwide.
