Julian Nagelsmann, the German national team coach, has announced the squad selected for the World Cup taking place in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. As widely anticipated, Manuel Neuer is set to keep the German goal after a two-year break, and Nagelsmann confirmed that Neuer is designated as the undisputed number one. The coach praised Neuer’s presence, stating that every person understands the unique “aura” and quality he brings to the team, and highlighted that Neuer is fully committed to playing another tournament.
The team roster includes the experienced goalkeepers Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. While Jonas Urbig from FC Bayern München is not officially listed in the core squad, he is slated to travel with the team and, according to Nagelsmann, will primarily support the squad during training sessions.
For the defensive unit, the following players have been named: Waldemar Anton, Nathaniel Brown, Pascal Groß, Joshua Kimmich, Felix Nmecha, Aleksandar Pavlovic, David Raum, Antonio Rüdiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, Angelo Stiller, Jonathan Tah, and Malick Thiaw.
In the midfield and attack, Nagelsmann has selected a blend of talent including Nadiem Amiri, Maximilian Beier, Leon Goretzka, Kai Havertz, Lennart Karl, Jamie Leweling, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Deniz Undav, Florian Wirtz, and Nick Woltemade.
The World Cup tournament kicks off on June 11th with a match between Mexico and South Africa. Germany’s first appearance is scheduled for June 14th against Curacao. Following this, the squad will take on Equatorial Guinea on June 20th and Ecuador on June 25th. The immediate goal for the German team remains the qualification for the preliminary round. It is worth noting that the German team failed to advance to the knockout stages in both 2018 and 2022.
