Neubauer and Campact Plan Blockade of AfD Party Conference Amid Constitutional Concerns

Campaign organization Campact, alongside climate activist Luisa Neubauer, plans to participate in the protests scheduled for the upcoming weekend against the AfD party convention in Erfurt. This decision was revealed in a joint statement reported by Spiegel.

In the declaration, Campact director Christoph Bautz and Neubauer announced their intention to join the peaceful sit-ins organized by the “Widersetzen” alliance. Their stated goal is to obstruct the party convention “for as long as possible.” The duo justifies their action by referencing a report from the Gesellschaft für Freiheitsrechte (Society for Civil Liberties), which determined that the AfD is “demonstrably unconstitutional” and could potentially gain government power in Saxony-Anhalt within just a few months. They argued that a civil society, having learned from “the darkest hours of our nation’s history,” must actively counteract the party’s attempts to undermine the constitution.

Bautz and Neubauer also extend a call to the “democratic center,” urging them to join the demonstrations. They emphasized that resistance against the far-right must not be viewed merely as a leftist issue, but rather as a shared responsibility for all Democrats. The statement concluded: “So much is at stake; we cannot afford passivity or indifference.”

The AfD’s federal party convention is set to take place on July 4th and 5th at the Erfurt trade fair grounds. Multiple civil society alliances have called for protests. The “Widersetzen” alliance, according to its own plans, is organizing blockades intended to completely halt the convention, and it is supported by the Left Party, including several members of the Left parliamentary group who plan to participate in the events.
