The 191st Oktoberfest has officially opened. Munich’s new Mayor, Dominik Krause of the Green Party, needed two attempts on Saturday afternoon, precisely at noon, to tap the first beer barrel during his inauguration. Since taking office in May, this was the first time Krause was entrusted with the task. He subsequently spoke the traditional phrase, “O’zapft is! Auf eine friedliche Wiesn!” (It’s tapped! To a peaceful Wiesn!). Following tradition, the acting Minister-President, Markus Söder of the CSU, was the one presented with the first liter of beer. The world’s largest folk festival will run for 16 days, starting on September 19th and concluding on October 4th. An estimated six million guests from around the globe are expected to attend.
