A moderate-strength earthquake struck Peru on Thursday afternoon. The tremor occurred at approximately 1:00 PM local time (8:00 PM German time) in a relatively sparsely populated region of the Andes Mountains.
Geologists initially reported the magnitude at 6.7. While initial reports suggest the depth of 66 kilometers could potentially limit the effects, it is important to note that such values are often corrected later. Although no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been filed, quakes of this magnitude regularly pose the risk of harm within a radius of up to 70 kilometers.
