On Tuesday, a military aircraft crashed on the grounds of the US Air Base Spangdahlem, located in the Rhineland-Palatinate Eifel region. Initial reports from the Bitburg-Prüm district indicate that one person was injured in the incident. Fire and police response efforts have since concluded.
Local residents reported seeing a large plume of smoke and hearing sirens. The presumed site of the accident is located near the extension of the runway, close to the golf course. Emergency personnel from the Bernkastel-Wittlich and Bitburg-Prüm districts were alerted.
According to SWR, two aircraft took off that afternoon, one of which subsequently crashed. It was reported that the pilot activated the ejection seat and managed to exit the aircraft. The exact details of the event were initially unclear.
