Renate Künast Challenges Kai Wegner’s Mayoral Fitness Amid City Crises

Former Green Party candidate for the Mayor’s office, Renate Künast, is challenging the suitability of incumbent Mayor Kai Wegner (CDU). In an interview with the “Rheinische Post,” Künast stated that the question of his character and fitness for leadership arises when a mayor essentially refuses crisis management-especially concerning freezing children or elderly people who cannot even heat up a warm soup for themselves-and then lies about it.

She added that the despair among CDU members is so acute that one must be prepared for “anything,” including the end of Wegner’s candidacy. Currently, party members feel ashamed to knock on doors. Künast asserted that the CDU, under Wegner, can no longer legitimately claim to be focused on the people of Berlin, their job security, or their children’s future.

Künast claimed that in every area, Wegner and his CDU have failed. This includes issues such as maintaining good schools, ensuring safe traffic routes, particularly for children, increasing tourist attraction, and preserving public spaces like Tempelhofer Feld.
