SC Freiburg Stuns Schalke in Deficit to Secure Top Spot and Remain Unbeaten

SC Freiburg secured an important 2-1 home victory against FC Schalke 04 during the fifth round of the Bundesliga. Despite facing a numerical disadvantage after Yuito Suzuki received a yellow-red card in the 64th minute, the Breisgau team managed to defend their lead and climb to the top of the league table. The decisive goal came in the 85th minute when Keisuke Goto capitalized on a precise cross from Vincenzo Grifo, connecting with his head.

The match started with a strong performance from Freiburg, who took the lead early in the 10th minute thanks to Maximilian Eggestein. After a corner kick, Loris Karius managed to deflect a header from Matthias Ginter, allowing Eggestein to tap the ball in from close range. However, Schalke managed to level the score in the 30th minute. Adrian Gantenbein scored a well-placed shot from distance, exploiting the momentary uncertainty of goalkeeper Backhaus following a corner taken by Robin Gosens.

The second half saw an intense battle, with Freiburg remaining fiercely combative even while playing with ten men. The yellow-red card for Suzuki seemed to have galvanized the team, energizing them rather than diminishing their efforts. The introduction of Vincenzo Grifo injected fresh energy into the game and set up Goto’s winning goal perfectly.

In the final minutes, Schalke attempted desperately to equalize, but the Freiburg defense held firm. The Gelsenkirchen side could not convert their numerical advantage into goals and ultimately had to accept defeat.

This hard-fought victory allowed Freiburg to remain undefeated this season, earning them the first spot in the standings, though they are currently tied on points with Dortmund. Conversely, Schalke slips down to thirteenth place.
