In the tenth Rhineland derby between 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach, Köln claimed a 2-1 victory in the fifth matchday of the 1st Bundesliga.
Köln started in control, taking the lead in the 26th minute through Isak Jóhannesson. Following a free-kick delivered by Borna Sosa, Jóhannesson struck a volley from distance into the top left corner. Gladbach found an equalizer shortly thereafter in the 39th minute, with Joe Scally scoring from close range after Simpson-Pusey’s header attempt failed.
The first half was notably marred by injury woes for the hosts; in stoppage time, Ellyes Skhiri was forced off the pitch after being fouled by Florian Neuhaus, and Tom Krauß replaced him for the second half.
In the second half, Köln capitalized on their improved pressure. In the 67th minute, Said El Mala scored a beautiful goal after taking advantage of a quick passing sequence initiated by Jóhannesson and Maina. El Mala darted into the center and slotted the ball into the far corner, securing the 2-1 lead.
Despite intense tackling from both sides and continued chances, the score remained unchanged until the final whistle. Borussia Mönchengladbach, managed by the newly appointed Alexander Blessin, fought hard, but they could not overcome the resilience of the Köln defense even with substitutions. Köln successfully used their home advantage to secure valuable points with the win.
